AOS Student Membership Awards

Congratulations to the 2019 Student Membership Award winners! The 2019 application cycle will open on September 1.

The American Ornithological Society (AOS) provides one-year student membership awards to students from anywhere in the world interested in pursuing a career in ornithology. Membership awards provide full AOS membership benefits, including free access to The Auk: Ornithological Advances, The Condor: Ornithological Applications, and Birds of North America, as well as eligibility for AOS student travel, presentation, and research awards. AOS reserves the right to limit the number of membership awards provided during one academic year.


  • ● Applicant must NOT have previously been a member of AOS (including either AOU or COS).
  • ● Applicant must be (1) a currently enrolled student of any country, any level, or (2) a student between degree-seeking programs with intent to re-enter a degree program in the future.

Already have an existing Member Portal account?

If you already have have a Member Portal username and password (e.g., you are a current or previous member of one of the other OSNA societies; please note, you must not have a current or previous membership in AOS), you can navigate directly to the submission form. Please note, depending on your browser settings, you may be asked to log in again. Upon logging in, you should be redirected to the submission form.

Don’t have a Member Portal account or you are not sure?

If you do not already have a username and password, you will first need to set up your free account from the Member Portal login page. Click the “Create a User Account” on the left side of the login page.

If you are not sure if you have an existing account, click the “Forgot your password? Click here” link on the left side of the page and then enter your email address on the following page. If you have an existing account with that email address, the system will send you a link to reset your password.

Once you have your account established, you can navigate to the submission form by selecting “View Open Competitions” in the Awards, Competitions, & Submissions section in the lower right of the screen. On the resulting page, find the AOS Student Membership Award competition and click “View.”

Your application must include:

  • ● A resume or curriculum vitae describing your current degree program, the expected date of completion, your academic or work experience, and your interests in ornithology
  • ● A short note from your academic advisor indicating support for the application on institutional letterhead from the institution in you are currently enrolled.
  • ● If you are between degree-seeking programs with intent to re-enter a degree program in the future, you should indicate this in your application, and your faculty indication of support should come from your previous supervisor and include their confirmation that you intend to re-enter a degree program in the future.

Applicants granted a Student Membership Award will have time to register early for the 2019 annual meeting, compete for Student Travel Awards, apply for the Student Presentation Award Competition, and apply for a Student Research Award (see the AOS Calendar for a complete list of award deadlines).

AOS reserves the right to limit the number of membership awards provided during one year (1 Jan to 31 Dec).
