AOS Merger History

The American Ornithologists’ Union (AOU) and Cooper Ornithological Society (COS) merged in 2016 to form the American Ornithological Society (AOS), which is energized to serve ornithologists and to advance studies and conservation of birds in the 21st century. This merger solidifies a long history of collaboration between the two eminent ornithological societies. Prior to the merger, AOU and COS were involved in several joint ventures that streamlined efforts and benefited ornithology:

The merged AOS carries all of the same membership benefits that individuals had in the former AOU and COS.

The 2015-2016 merger process is detailed here.
