AOS Membership: Join, Renew, Update

Learn about membership benefits, or simply begin the join/renewal process! There are different rates based on membership category (which can be seen in detail below).

As an AOS member you can tap the society’s many resources, strengthen your professional networks, and advance your ornithological career.
Memberships are from 1 January through 31 December.

Members and institutional subscribers receive unlimited online access to The Auk: Ornithological Advances and The Condor: Ornithological Applications. Members and institutional subscribers may also order "Print on Demand" annual subscriptions or individual issues of the 2018 journals from Sheridan Press starting in December 2017 at Annual print subscriptions for libraries/institutions are $400 for each journal. Annual print subscriptions for AOS members are $160 per year for each journal, and individual print issues may be ordered for $55 per issue. Your membership also entitles you to unlimited access to the Birds of North America, along with member-only discounts (such as annual meeting registration and publishing fees) and other valuable benefits as well:

To join or renew your membership, login to the OSNA Member Portal.

  • Apply for or renew your membership
  • Enroll in our auto renewal program
  • Manage your personal profile information
  • Purchase gift memberships in the AOS for students and colleagues

How to log on:

  • Visit the OSNA Member Portal.
  • If you have already set up your account, enter your Login ID, which is your email address, and enter your password. You will go directly to your personal Profile page.
  • To set up your account on your first visit to the OSNA Member Portal, click on Forgot Password under the Login boxes. Next, enter your Login ID, which is the email address where you received this message. You will receive an email to reset your password. When you click on the link in the email, this will take you to a page to enter a new password. Once you have done that, you will go to your personal Profilepage (this is your home page.) If you do not receive an email within a few minutes, check your spam folder. If the message is not in your in-box or spam folder, it has probably been blocked by your email system; contact OSNA Membership Manager Scott Gillihan ( to receive your password.

Please note that all prices listed are $USD.

Student Membership

2018 dues:  $30 early bird through 11-17-17; $32 after.
AOS student memberships are for (1) currently enrolled students of any country, at any level (pre-college through postdoctoral fellow), and (2) students who are between degree-seeking programs with the intent to re-enter a degree program in the future.

Student Membership Award

AOS encourages any individual who qualifies for a student membership (see above) to apply for a complimentary one-year student membership award.  Students who have not previously been a member in the AOS (either the AOU or COS) are eligible to apply. This is a wonderful way to get involved in the society and explore its many benefits.

Early Professional Membership

2018 dues:  $50 early bird through 11-17-17; $55 after.
AOS early professional memberships are available to individuals who have completed their studies and have received their terminal degree within the past five years.

Regular Membership

2018 dues: $85 early bird through 11-17-17; $90 after.
AOS regular memberships are for any individual who does not choose or qualify for another membership category offered. 
A second regular membership from the same household, or family membership, is an additional $30 per year (early bird through 11-17-17), or $32 thereafter. 

Emeritus/Retired Membership

2018 dues:  $30 early bird through 11-17-17; $32 after.

AOS offers a special membership fee for retired and emeritus members.  This category of membership is not intended for new members.  Members who have been an AOS member (either with the AOU or COS previsouly) for at least 40 years qualify for emeritus membership.  Members who have recently retired from their professional position but remain active in ornithology are qualify for retired membership. The society salutes your longstanding membership and steadfast commitment to the profession!

Special Countries Membership

2018 dues:  $30 early bird through 11-17-17; $32 after.

AOS offers a special membership fee to individuals of many countries around the world. Special Countries memberships are not offered to residents of the United States, Canada, Israel, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and the following Western European countries: Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Spain, and Portugal.

Life Membership

AOS offers a life membership for those interested in a sustained commitment to the society and its mission. Life memberships are $2,880.  Payment may be made in a one-time payment or four installments of $720.  Life memberships require no annual renewal. Life membership dues contribute directly to AOS’s Council-designated General Endowment Fund.

CONTRIBUTING MEMBERSHIP (new this year, 2017)

AOS offers a contributing membership for those interested in providing a higher level of annual membership support to the society.  Contributing membership starts at $500 per year, and includes a 1 year AOS membership through 12/31/18.  Contributing members will be recognized annually on the AOS website along with other donors to the Society. The contribution value of the membership is tax deductible to the full extent of the law.

2018 rates:  Early Bird standard rates thru 11/17/17, Regular rates after.
Purchase a membership for one or more individuals. Standard rates per appropriate member category will apply.
