AOS Cooper Award

James G. Cooper Young Professional Award

The James G. Cooper Young Professional Award recognizes early-career ornithological researchers for their outstanding contributions in any field of ornithology. It consists of a certificate, $500 honorarium, and a travel stipend of up to $1000 and gratis registration to attend the annual meeting. Awardees are also invited to give a plenary at the annual meeting. The award is named in honor of James G. Cooper, a pioneering naturalist and ornithologist in the western regions of North America.

Candidates may apply for the award themselves, may be nominated by another member(s) of AOS, or may be added to the slate of candidates by the Early Professional Awards Committee. Annual awardees are selected by the Early Professional Awards Committee. The AOS Awards committees strive to develop a balanced annual slate of nominees that represent the Society and the diversity of its members.

The successful nominee will excel in research and show distinct promise for leadership in ornithology within and beyond North America. In addition, they must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Be a member of AOS.
  • Be within/up to the end of their third year post terminal degree (Master's or PhD) or in the final nine months of their graduate studies at the time of the annual meeting. (An extra year of eligibility is granted for parental leave.)
  • Have not received the award previously.

SUBMITTING A NOMINATION

Nominations should be submitted online via the Member Portal.

Information required to apply or nominate a candidate includes:

  1. The name, institution, and contact information of the candidate/nominee
  2. Upload a mini-paper of their research (following the guidelines of Articles submission outlined in Nature); the body of text, abstract through discussion, should not exceed 1,500 words; literature cited, tables, figures, and figure captions are not included in the word count, but figures and tables are limited to 4 total)
  3. Upload a 2-page curriculum vitae indicating graduation date

If you already have have a Member Portal username and password (e.g., you are a current or previous member of AOS or one of the other OSNA societies), you can navigate directly to the submission form here. *Please note, depending on your browser settings, you may be asked to log in again. Upon logging in, you should be redirected to the submission form.

Don’t have a Member Portal account or you are not sure?

If you do not already have a username and password, you will first need to set up your free account from the Member Portal login page. Click the “Create a User Account” on the left side of the login page.

If you are not sure if you have an existing account, click the “Forgot your password? Click here” link on the left side of the page and then enter your email address on the following page. If you have an existing account with that email address, the system will send you a link to reset your password.

Once you have your account established, you can navigate to the submission form by selecting “View Open Competitions” in the Awards, Competitions, & Submissions section in the lower right of the screen. On the resulting page, find the AOS James G. Cooper Young Professional Award competition and click “View."
